Bed Bugs Insect

The Terrible Insect Known as the Bed Bugs

There are, at a minimum, 4 million species or kinds of insects living in our planet. New species are described everyday.

Insects are the most resilient living organisms? Insects are so hardy that thousands of species can live for years without nourishment or feeding. The bed bug, for example, can go for over a year between feedings.

Studies and scientists’ assertions suggest that if a world catastrophe ended human life, most insects would survive such a world disaster..

Insects are gifted with protective structures, usually in the outermost layer of their skin or physical structures. These protective layers, which are naturally and usually characterized by wax-like substances, is crucial in the insect ability to survive and adapt to harsh physical environmental changes.

Bed bugs

With all of these millions of insects living with us, why do we care about bed bugs? Because bed bugs, like most of the other insect we actually notice, are a nuisance!

Bed bugs as a member of the kingdom Insecta, is scientifically known as Cimex lectularius.

Bed bugs are so tiny that you can hardly see them even in broad daylight. But there are bed bugs that can grow to about one fourth of an inch, the typical growth limit. These bed bugs are the mature ones, that have a regular source of food and a good natural or conducive habitat.

Bed bugs, in your home, live in places that are usually overlooked by people.

Insearching your rooms, you will find bed bugs inside small and tiny crevices, cracks or holes in the wall, the ceiling, the floor, some furniture or often your bed.

Bed bugs are nocturnal sleeping or hiding during daytime to finally come out and hunt for food at night time.

Bed bugs' food

Bed bugs subsist on blood. And the blood needed by bed bugs for nourishment comes from mammals, or hot-blooded animals. Attracted by carbon dioxide, they can tell by mere smelling, if a prospective victim or host is hot-blooded or not.

Bed bugs suck blood from people. But their food sources are not limited to people’s blood. They can also suck, as alternatives, blood of dogs, cats, birds, or whatever animal or pet they can get their mouth into. Although birds and bats are the most common alternatives to people.

Bed bugs are among those insects that have developed structures like beaks, that can pierce into victim's skin. Such insects use those structures to suck and sip blood from victims.

Because bed bugs devour blood, it follows that their excretion would refect that diet. As they say, what goes in is also what comes out.

Hence, you can find a bed bug's feces are red or deep-red colored. They may appear as such tiny reddish borwn stains in your bed, your bed sheet, furniture surfaces or wherever they may have contact with.

One way to determine if you have a bed bug infestation is by finding such signs of excretion. Bed bugs feces betray them.

While bed bugs do suck blood, which can cause allergic reactions, their bite are otherwise very safe. Unlike mosquitoes, which transmit and transfer diseases form one person to another, bed bugs are not disease carriers.

Scientists have found that bed bugs’ stomachs have linings and peptides that will not allow bacteria, fungi and viruses to thrive. All you have to worry about is being bitten.
