Tips To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs

by Tim Gorman

Bed bugs can be a nuisance, as they are extremely small and can hide in cracks and areas that are not easily reached. The average household contains many bed bugs, but often they remain undetected due to their ability to hide and based on their size. It’s not an easy task to get rid of bed bugs, but if you follow some simple directions, you should be able to start limiting the number of bed bugs within your home.

Step #1:

The first step is to actually detect if there are any bed bugs within your home. To do this, you must first know what a bed bug looks like. In general bed bugs are thought to be brown in color and can grow to be up to half an inch in length. They hide in the smallest of areas, and in hard to reach areas such as crevices. You can usually detect if you have bed bugs, if you are actually experiencing symptoms of itchy skin or red or white spots on your body from being bitten. This is not a tell tale sign of bed bugs alone as there are other insects that do bite, such as mosquitoes, but unlike bed bugs you can clearly see mosquitoes, therefore if no mosquitoes are seen there is a good chance you have bed bugs. Check your mattress, chairs for any shed skin and focus primarily in your bedroom or the most lived in areas of your home.

Step #2:

Once you’ve identified that you indeed have bed bugs, the next step is to narrow your search further. Remove all the sheets from your bed, the comforters and thoroughly clean them, washing them in hot water. The hotter the temperature, the better the chance of killing the bed bugs that may have attached themselves to the sheets or comforter.

Step #3:

Clean your mattresses and sofas thoroughly. If possible you can place items outside for a period of time providing the temperature is really hot. Bed bugs do not like to be exposed to high temperatures, therefore if you can place your sofa or mattress in your backyard for a few hours or an extended period of time it can kill the bed bugs.

Step #4:

Steam vacuuming the sofa and mattress and other areas that you suspect the bed bugs maybe located. This can aid in eradicating the bed bugs. It is very important to completely discard the bags within the vacuum immediately into the thrash bin outside of your home to ensure you do not give the bed bugs an opportunity to re-enter your home.
